The artwork 1755 presents a human hand as a living map of Lisbon before the great earthquake. Instead of simple wrinkles, the palm and fingers are etched with the city's streets, palaces, and churches, as if history itself were engraved into the skin.
The river Tagus seems to flow across the wrist, while the city's grandest monuments rise along the knuckles. It is a powerful image: the city is not built of stone, but is part of the body. In this hand, we read the story of a golden age frozen in time, capturing Lisbon's beauty just a moment before it was lost.
