In the Veins of Cobalt: Tracing the Origins of My New Collection "Blue One"

29/06/2026
Every new collection is born from a fracture, a journey, or a prolonged silence. For my latest series, "Blue One", I wanted to dive into the heart of a nomadic pigment that entirely reshaped the visual landscape of my adopted home: Cobalt Blue. Through these pieces, I invite you to explore a story of maritime fusions, waiting, and eternity.

Lisbon: The Epicenter of White Gold

To understand the genesis of this collection, we must travel back to the 16th century. Portugal became the first European nation to anchor on the shores of China and bring back the celebrated, elusive blue and white porcelain. Driven by the audacity of its navigators and the power of its trade routes, Lisbon immediately established itself as the peak hub for Chinese porcelain trade in Europe, fascinating the entire continent with this coveted "white gold."

What deeply captivates me as an artist is the immediate cultural fusion that ignited at the core of this exchange. Very quickly, Chinese artisans began integrating distinctly Portuguese symbols caravels braving the open seas, royal coats of arms, armillary spheres into their traditional ancestral designs. This aesthetic hybridization profoundly transformed the local art of azulejos. The facades of palaces and churches across Lisbon abandoned their colorful palettes to embrace blue and white exclusively, turning into monumental mural porcelains under the open sky. It is this very heritage, this transition of matter, that I have sought to capture.

The Concept: The Wandering Blue and the Act of Waiting

Every maritime civilization is built upon a painful yet poetic fracture: the man who departs to defy the unknown aboard the caravels, and the woman who remains behind, carrying the weight of the land, the structure of the family, and the heavy burden of silence. It is precisely from the depth of this waiting that Fado was born the visceral voice of Portuguese Saudade.

The guiding thread of "Blue One" is a nomadic pigment: Cobalt Blue. I view it as a universal traveler. Born in China under the Yuan dynasty, polished in Persia, transiting through the splendor of Al-Andalus and the precision of Delft, it finally dropped anchor in Lisbon, serving as a chromatic shield against oblivion. Seven centuries of history, artistic migrations, and shed tears are condensed into this single, absolute color.

"It is not a sadness. It is a form of fidelity."  Fado.

Transforming Absence into Eternity

In my studio, working with this blue was an exercise in transmission and raw emotion. "Blue One" is designed to be both historical and vibrant, a space where the almost mystical softness of Chinese blue unites with the profound strength of the Portuguese soul.

My goal has been to translate this tension: utilizing the delicate refinement of a porcelain motif to sublime the ache of absence, transforming it into an eternal work of art. The blue does not separate worlds; it weaves the definitive bond between those who sailed away and those who remember.

The "Blue One" collection is now on display at the gallery. Every texture, every layer of resin, and every stroke of charcoal has been crafted to make this unique blue resonate under the light. I hope you will feel the journey, the anticipation, and that fierce fidelity to the memories that define us.
